When people ask me what I write, I find myself tacking on 'erotica' after just about every other possible genre and format I can reasonably lay claim to. Why? I'm certainly not ashamed to write about sex. But as I quickly learned when I began my foray into this genre, the audience-and indeed the authors-are overwhelmingly women. I've read erotica written by men that was the equivalent of a lockerroom conversation about the latest weekend conquests, and while I don't deny that has its place, it was never my reason for reading erotica.
It's been said that men are visually stimulated, while for women that sense is generally lower on the list, behind sound and touch. An interesting factoid, in regards to written erotica, unless it can be said to appeal to the 'inner' ear.
For me, writing erotica is a chance to explore the topic of sex from many perspectives; i.e., those of the different characters that I create for the story. Having experience as an actor, I have some idea how to step into someone else's skin. But writing sexy stuff is more that that, even. It's a chance to tackle the mysteries of everyone's favorite subject from above, and below and all around and within. It's just plain damn fun. And while we may never get the chance to have a one night stand with a vampire, or shower sex on a space ship (blatant plug for my own 'Special Delivery') in our lives, reading a story about those particular escapades is the next best thing, especially if the story is well-written and engaging.
That's my goal, to create sexual scenarios that are unusual (outlandish even), poignant and of course fun. Hope you'll all ride along. You can even be on top if you want.
