Food Was the Sexiest Part of Julie & Julia

...although the chemistry between Julia (played by the miracle known as Meryl Streep) and Paul, her diplomat husband was definitely cooking as well. These two middle-aged spouses, in fact, were far smokier together than the younger couple of Julie and Eric, who were more like two toddlers arguing over ownership of a shovel in the playground sandbox.

I just managed to delete the rest of this post. This is why one should never write a blog entry directly into the blog box.

Anyway, watching this movie made me wish that the concession stand served sole meuniere, boeuf bourguignon, and gimlets instead of popcorn with fake butter and soft drinks.

Food choices really do tell so much about a person's character, as well as the times we live in. I wish there was more food in movies, because most people do eat as they live their complicated lives, even if they don't actually cook. As a pro-butter omnivore with blessedly low cholestoral levels and a frame that still falls within the parameters of petite, I sometimes feel like an irresponsible hedonist when confronted with friends' diets..."juicing" instead of eating fruits and vegetables; no bread; and of course, no butter. At least I mostly run with carnivores. And it was a pleasure to cook an English breakfast for my English friend as he packed for a three-week vacation nearly three weeks ago. Upon his return, I want to surprise him with a vat of spaghetti carbonara and a caprese salad...after our other appetites have been satiated, that is....

I loved that movie in the same way that I love watching Top Chef. I loved everything about Meryl Streep, and Amy Adams? She was okay.

I found it interesting at the end that Julia Child did NOT like the project. I learned later that Julia did not like others profiting off the use of her name, which is how she viewed that project. She's right--but is profiting off someone else's success wrong? Something to think about, anyway.

I own about 3 Julia Child cookbooks--not one of them is Mastering the Art of French Cooking. Funny.

It is an interesting issue you raise, that of profiting off someone else's name--perhaps Julia, being about 90 years old, also didn't care for blogs?

As for me, I'd be flattered if some newcomer wanted to use my name or success to make his/her reputation...of course, this is all hypothetical, as I'm about two and a half leagues below "cult figure" and my reputation is dubious at best!

"Bon appetit!"
